Rainfed agriculture

language culture Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Most farms use rain to grow food. This is called rainfed agriculture. Farmers wait for rain to fall from the sky. They do not use water from rivers or lakes. This is different from irrigation. Irrigation is when people bring water to crops from other places.

Rainfed farming is very important. It provides most food for poor people in many lands. In sub-Saharan Africa, over 95% of farms use rain. In Latin America, almost 90% of farms use rain. In the Near East and North Africa, it is 75%. Many other places also rely on the rain.

Sometimes, it is hard to grow enough food. Some lands are very dry. This can lead to hunger and poverty. Many hungry people live in these dry areas. They also face water scarcity, which means there is not enough water. Changes in the weather can make this harder for farmers.

There is a way to help. Farmers can learn to manage rainwater better. They can also use small ways to add water to their fields. This can help more people grow more food. Better ways to use water can help families stay healthy.
