Rainfed agriculture

language culture Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Rainfed agriculture is a special way of farming. It relies mostly on rain falling from the sky to grow crops. This type of farming is very important for many people. It provides much of the food eaten by poor communities in developing countries. Most countries in the world depend on rain for their grain food.

This is different from irrigated agriculture. Irrigation is when farmers use water from other places. They might use water from streams, rivers, lakes, or groundwater.

Growing food with only rain can be a hard job. Farmers must wait for the weather to give them water. In some places, the soil is not very healthy. High heat can make water disappear through evaporation. Droughts or floods can also change how crops grow. Sometimes, there is not enough water for the plants to thrive.

This can lead to hunger and poverty for many families. Managing rainwater and soil moisture is a key part of farming.

Many different parts of the world use rainfed farming. It is the main way people grow food in many regions. In sub-Saharan Africa, more than 95% of farmed land is rainfed. In Latin America, almost 90% of the land uses rain. The Near East and North Africa use it on 75% of their land.

East Asia uses it on 65% of its land. South Asia uses it on about 60% of its land.

History shows us how much land we use for food. Since the late 1960s, agricultural land has grown by 20% to 25%. This helped grain production grow by about 30% during that time. In developing countries, rainfed grain yields are often lower. They average about 1.5 hectares per unit of land. This is much lower than irrigated yields of 3.1 hectares.

Most of the increase in rainfed food comes from using more land.

Scientists and groups work to find better ways to farm. The International Water Management Institute studies how water is used. They found that managing water better can help many poor people. They suggest using small-scale irrigation to help crops grow.

This can help farmers deal with weather changes. Better water management can help reduce hunger and poverty. It can turn a hard job into a successful way to feed the world.
