In these places, rain falls mostly in the winter. This water stays in the soil like a bank. Farmers use that stored water to grow crops later.

Farmers must be very careful with water. They space plants far apart. This gives each plant more moisture to drink. They also pull weeds. Weeds can steal water from the crops.

Wind can be a problem for these farms. It can blow the topsoil away in dust storms. To stop this, farmers use windbreaks. They may also leave old plant bits on the ground. This helps protect the soil. Dryland farming is used in many places. It is common in the United States and Australia. It is also used in parts of Mexico and the Middle East.
