Robert Henry Lee found the falls in 1913. He wanted to name them after a leader. But the name Helmcken Falls was chosen instead. It honors a man named John Sebastian Helmcken.

There are six other waterfalls on this river. Some are easy to reach by road. Others need a long walk on a trail. You can see the falls from a viewing platform. There is also a trail called Brink Trail. It takes about one hour to walk each way.

Winter is a special time to visit. A giant cone of ice grows at the bottom. It can grow 50 meters tall or more! Some people even climb the ice here. They call it the Yosemite of ice climbing.
