Governments set these areas aside to protect them. They save places with great natural or historic value. This helps wild nature stay safe for a long time. Many people feel national pride when they see these lands. Most parks are also open for the public to visit.

A group called the IUCN helps define what a park is. They say a park should be a large area. It should have ecosystems that humans have not changed much. These places often have plants and animals that are very special. Governments must work to stop people from using the land for profit. They must also provide enough staff and money to protect it. Visitors can enter for education or fun under special conditions.

Protecting land has been happening for a long time.

In 1776, the Tobago Main Ridge was protected. In 1778, Bogd Khan Uul in Mongolia was also set aside. These areas were kept safe to protect nearby farmland. In 1832, President Andrew Jackson helped protect land in Arkansas. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed a law for Yosemite Valley. This law meant no one could own that land privately. It was managed by California for people to use and enjoy.

Yellowstone is a very important part of this history.

It was established in 1872 in the United States. Many people believe it was the first national park in the world. Because a state did not manage it, the federal government took charge. This helped prevent the mismanagement seen in other places. Today, there are 6,555 national parks across the globe. The largest one is the Northeast Greenland National Park. It was started in 1974 and covers a huge area.

Many famous people helped shape these protected lands.

John Muir is often called the "Father of the National Parks." He wrote articles that helped save Yosemite. Other leaders like Theodore Roosevelt and Lady Bird Johnson also helped. These parks connect us to the wild world around us. They let us see beautiful things like the beech trees in England.

They remind us why nature is worth saving.
