society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A national park is a designated nature park used for conservation purposes. These areas are chosen because they possess unparalleled natural, historic, or cultural significance.

A national park can consist of natural, semi-natural, or even developed land. Typically, these areas are owned and managed by a government. While standards for designation vary by country, many governments protect these lands as symbols of national pride. They also aim to preserve wild nature for posterity, meaning for future generations. Most national parks remain accessible to the public for various uses.

The mechanism of a national park relies on legal protection and management.

To function correctly, a park must have a high competent authority. This authority takes steps to prevent or eliminate human exploitation of the land. They must also enforce rules that protect ecological, geomorphological, or aesthetic features. In 1971, specific benchmarks were established to evaluate these areas. These include a minimum size of 1,000 hectares within protected zones. Additionally, there must be sufficient budget and staff to provide effective protection. This protection includes a prohibition on exploiting natural resources, such as building dams.

Different organizations use different categories to define these protected areas. The International Union for Conservation of Nature, or IUCN, defines a national park as a Category II protected area.

However, many countries use the term "national park" more loosely. For example, in the United Kingdom and Taiwan, the term describes scenic areas that attract tourists. These areas might even contain substantial human settlements. Other places might meet the IUCN definition but use different names, like "preserve" or "reserve." In Australia, most national parks are run by state governments rather than the federal government. In the Netherlands, they are often administered by provinces.

The history of land protection began long before the modern national park system.

As early as 1735, the Naples government in Italy passed laws to protect natural areas. These were sometimes used as game reserves for royalty. In 1776, the Tobago Main Ridge Forest Reserve was established. In 1778, the area around Bogd Khan Uul Mountain in Mongolia was also restricted. These early efforts were often meant to protect surrounding farmland from cultivation. By 1832, the United States made its first federal effort to set aside land. President Andrew Jackson signed legislation for the Hot Springs Reservation in Arkansas to protect thermal springs.

Significant legal changes occurred in the mid-1800s to protect famous landscapes.

In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed an act for Yosemite Valley. This act ceded the valley and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias to California. It made private ownership of this land impossible. The state was tasked with managing the area for public use and recreation. However, people felt the state mismanaged the land. This debate led to the creation of the first true national park under federal control. In 1872, the United States established Yellowstone National Park. It is widely considered the first and oldest national park in the world.

Many influential people helped drive the movement for conservation.

John Muir is often called the "Father of the National Parks." His influential articles in The Century Magazine helped form the basis for legislation. Other leaders who fought for land and animal conservation include Theodore Roosevelt and Lady Bird Johnson. President Abraham Lincoln and Laurance Rockefeller also played important roles. These individuals helped ensure that the beauty of the wild could be preserved through legal action. Their work helped transform how governments view their responsibility to the environment.

Today, the impact of national parks is measurable and vast.

In 2006, the IUCN identified 6,555 national parks worldwide that met its specific criteria. The largest of these is the Northeast Greenland National Park, established in 1974. National parks also serve as vital refuges for wildlife. For instance, in Italy's Gran Paradiso National Park, the alpine ibex population increased tenfold after the area became a national park in 1922. These parks connect human society to broader scientific and educational systems. They allow us to study ecosystems that have not been materially altered by human occupation.
