This work includes saving buildings, objects, and even large landscapes. It is based on the idea that cities are built over many centuries. Because of this, people feel a duty to protect their shared history. This work focuses on the built environment. It does not usually include wild places like old forests.

In France, the movement began after much destruction during the French Revolution.

In 1790, Aubin-Louis Millin wrote a report about the Bastille. This helped start the idea of a "monument historique." In 1795, Alexandre Lenoir opened a museum to show saved pieces of architecture. The government later created a commission to study and fund these monuments. In 1837, this commission began making lists of important sites. They even used a group called the Mission Héliographique to take photos in 1851.

For example, Berkhamsted Castle became protected by law in 1833. However, the new railway still destroyed part of the castle in 1834. Other sites like York and Chester also faced threats. In 1847, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust was formed to save a special home. People also fought to protect "Common land" for everyone to use. In 1866, a group led by Augustus Smith broke fences to save Berkhamsted Common.

He saw that sites like Stonehenge were being harmed by tourists. In 1872, he bought land to stop people from building houses there. This led to the Ancient Monuments Protection Act of 1882. Later, George Curzon helped save Tattershall Castle in 1910. An American buyer had removed its large medieval fireplaces. Curzon bought the castle and gave it to the National Trust in 1925.

It was started in 1894 by Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter, and Hardwicke Canon Rawnsley. Their goal was to save beautiful lands and historic buildings for the whole nation. They also protect old furniture and art. Their first piece of land was in Wales in 1895. Today, this work helps us connect with the people who lived before us. It keeps our history alive for everyone to see.
