Real estate is a special kind of property. It includes land and all the buildings on it.

It also includes natural resources found on that land. This can be water, minerals, or even growing crops like timber. Real estate is different from personal property. Personal property includes things like your car, jewelry, or furniture. These items are not permanently attached to the land. Real estate stays in one place, so it is called immovable property.

People have thought about owning land for a very long time. Some ideas come from ancient Greek philosophy and Roman law. In the 1500s, people in England began the work of land appraisal. This helped them prepare land for farming. Later, writers discussed natural law to protect private property. One famous book was written by Emerich de Vattel in 1758. This book helped explain the idea of private property to the world. These early ideas helped shape how we own land today.

History shows us some very big real estate moments. In 1803, the United States made the Louisiana Purchase. The U.S. bought a huge area called the Louisiana Territory from France. This deal cost fifteen million dollars. That meant each acre cost about four cents! In 1855, the first real estate brokerage started in Chicago, Illinois. It was originally named L. D. Olmsted & Co. Later, in 1908, the National Association of Realtors was founded in Chicago. In 1916, the term "realtor" was first used for professionals.

Sometimes, the real estate market faces hard times. After the stock market crash of 1929, property values dropped a lot. For four years, prices fell by 50 percent. To help people buy homes again, the U.S. passed new laws. The Banking Act of 1933 and the National Housing Act of 1934 were very important. These laws allowed for mortgage insurance to help buyers. In 1938, a government agency called Fannie Mae was created. This helped lenders get more money to fund new homes. In 1968, the Fair Housing Act was passed to stop discrimination. This law helped African Americans join different neighborhoods.

There are many different ways to live in real estate. Some people live in a single-family detached house. Others live in an apartment, which is a unit in a larger building. You might live in a townhouse with shared walls. Some people even live in mobile homes or houseboats!

Today, many people use the internet to find homes. Real estate platforms first appeared on the World Wide Web in 1999. Real estate also affects our planet. In 2019, real estate was responsible for 39 percent of global emissions. Because of this, many people now focus on green development.
