In France, people worked hard to save monuments. During the French Revolution, many old things were destroyed. In 1795, a man named Alexandre Lenoir opened a museum. He used pieces of buildings he had saved. Later, the government created a group to study and fund these sites. They even used cameras to take photos of them in 1851.

In England, many old sites were in danger. New trains were built over them. At Stonehenge, tourists even carved names into the stones. A man named John Lubbock helped a lot.
