People build them to honor a person or a big event. They can also be important to a group of people. These structures help us remember our history and our culture. The word comes from a Latin word that means "to remind."

This helps us see the past so we can think about the future. Some monuments are even listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites to show they are special.

There are many different ways to make a monument.

Some are statues of famous people or symbols. Others are big buildings, like palaces, that show greatness. You might see a tall column with a statue on top. Some monuments are even long walls, like the Great Wall of China.

Some use light to remember things, like the Tribute in Light beams. Others use water, like beautiful fountains in a garden.

People have been making monuments for a very long time.

Some historians think they started in the prehistoric times. They might have been used to talk to spirits. In the past, some monuments were used to show power. For example, Trajan's Column in Rome shows political power. Later, in the nineteenth century, the way we think about historic monuments changed. This helped spread the idea of monuments across the world.

Monuments come in many specific shapes and sizes.

An obelisk is a tall, four-sided stone shape. The Washington Monument is the tallest obelisk in the world. Some monuments are called cenotaphs to honor people buried elsewhere. War memorials, like the India Gate, honor those who died in battles. There are also huge buildings like the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. These are landmarks because they are the tallest or most unique.

Because monuments hold so much meaning, they must be protected.

Sometimes they are damaged by time or by people. In 1687, a mortar round partially destroyed the Parthenon in Athens. Other times, people knock them down to change a community's beliefs. To stop this, many countries have special laws to protect them. Groups like UNESCO and the World Monuments Fund work hard to save them. This keeps our shared history safe for everyone to see.
