history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ruins are the leftover parts of buildings that used to be whole. These structures are now in a state of disrepair. This means they are broken or falling apart.

Many different things can cause a building to become a ruin. Some buildings fall apart because they are not maintained. Others are destroyed by people or by nature. Natural disasters are a very common cause of ruins. For example, a volcano destroyed the Roman city of Pompeii in the 1st century CE.

A huge earthquake also ruined much of San Francisco in 1906. In 1755, a massive earthquake and tsunami destroyed the city of Lisbon in Portugal.

Wars can also leave many things in ruins. In the past, cities were often built as strong forts. During wars, these cities were often attacked and ruined. The city of Delhi in India has been destroyed and rebuilt seven to ten times. Each new ruler rebuilt the city in their own way. Modern wars have also left cities in ruins. After World War II, many cities in Europe like Warsaw and Berlin were left in ruins. More recently, cities like Baghdad and Sarajevo have also been partially ruined by war.

Sometimes, people break buildings on purpose for many reasons. In the 16th century, King Henry VIII took property from religious groups in England. This was called the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Many of these buildings fell into ruin after their lead roofs were taken. In the 20th century, some people destroyed their own roofs to avoid paying taxes. This happened at places like Fetteresso Castle and Slains Castle in Scotland.

Other times, governments ordered buildings to be destroyed. For example, the English parliament ordered the destruction of Beverston Castle.

People have different views on ruins throughout history. In the Middle Ages, people often saw ruins as a sign of decay. Some people even used old Roman ruins as a place to find stone for new buildings. During the Renaissance, people began to see the beauty in old buildings. Artists and designers started to study them to create new styles. In the period of Romanticism, painters loved to paint ruined castles.

Some even thought about "ruin value." This is the idea that a building should be designed to look beautiful even after it collapses.

Today, ruins are very important to many different people. Historians and archaeologists study them to learn about the past. They look at everything from tiny houses to entire cities. Ruins can be places of worship or even old universities. Many of these important sites are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This helps people identify and protect them for everyone.
