Natural disaster

earth science Maturity 7-9 Vital Level 3 Next article →

A natural disaster is a very harmful event for a community. It happens when a natural hazard hits a group of people. A hazard is a threat that might cause harm. For example, an earthquake is a hazard. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake was a disaster.

Hazards can be geophysical or biological. They can also be caused by human choices. This includes things like how we build or use land.

Disasters can cause injury or loss of life. They also damage property and the economy.

Disasters happen in different ways and speeds. Some are rapid onset events. These happen with very little warning. Tornadoes and flash floods are good examples. Other events are slow onset events. A drought is a slow hazard. It can develop over many years.

The damage depends on how prepared people are. Strong buildings and roads help reduce harm. If buildings are weak, the damage is much worse.

Poor land use can also make risks higher. Some places are more vulnerable than others. This often happens in developing countries.

Many experts believe we should change how we speak. They think the term "natural disaster" is not quite right. They suggest using the simpler word "disaster." They say we should just name the type of hazard. This is because human actions can worsen the impact. For example, climate change affects weather hazards. This includes floods, heat waves, and wildfires.

Using the word "natural" can be misleading. It might make people think disasters are unavoidable. But many impacts are within our control. We can plan better to stay safe.

There are many different types of hazards. The FEMA National Risk Index lists 18 different hazards. These include avalanches, blizzards, and tsunamis. Other examples are lightning, sinkholes, and volcanic activity.

In 2012, there were 905 natural disasters worldwide. Most of these, about 93 percent, were weather-related.

In that year, the costs were 170 billion US dollars. The Asia-Pacific region is the most disaster-prone area. A person there is five times more likely to face a disaster. This is a very important fact for the world to know.

Disasters also leave a big impact on our environment. They can create huge amounts of waste very quickly. The 2011 tsunami in Japan produced 5 million tonnes of waste.

This waste can include things like plastic and styrofoam. In 2018, a typhoon in Hong Kong doubled the microplastics on beaches.

Disasters can also change how we manage trash. After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, relief work created a "second disaster." Millions of water bottles and tents were used. This waste can block drains and spread disease. We must learn to manage these things to protect our planet.
