Climate change vulnerability describes how much harm people or nature might face. It is a way to measure how likely it is that a system will be hurt by climate change. This concept applies to both humans and natural ecosystems. Vulnerability is a part of climate risk. It can change over time for different places. Some communities are more at risk than others.

Scientists look at two main ways this works. The first is biophysical vulnerability. This focuses on physical hazards like heat waves, heavy rain, or tropical cyclones. It looks at how these events change the land and energy flows. Some call this outcome vulnerability because it measures the damage done. It often looks at things like money lost or disruptions to life.

The second way is social vulnerability. This looks at the human side of the story. It studies political, economic, and social structures. These factors decide how well a society can respond to changes. For example, how a city manages its water can affect people during a drought. This is sometimes called contextual vulnerability. It looks at the starting point of a community.

Many factors make a group more vulnerable. People in low-income countries often face more risk. This is because they may have less money to build strong structures. Poverty, poor governance, and conflict can also increase risk. Certain jobs are very sensitive to weather changes. These include smallholder farming, fishing, and pastoralism. People like children, the elderly, and indigenous peoples are often more at risk.

Researchers have studied this since at least 2001. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) uses this concept in its reports. They use tools like vulnerability mapping to find high-risk areas. This helps leaders make plans to adapt and stay safe. One guide for this work is called the Vulnerability Sourcebook. Mapping helps show stakeholders where help is needed most.
