A natural hazard is a threat from nature. This might be an earthquake or a storm. A disaster happens when that hazard hits a community. It causes harm to people or property.

Some hazards happen very fast. A tornado or a flash flood can strike quickly. Other hazards happen slowly. A drought can develop over many years.

How we live affects the damage. Strong buildings and good roads help us. If a community is not ready, the harm is worse. This is why some places are more vulnerable. Vulnerable means a place is at higher risk of harm.

Some experts say we should just use the word "disaster." They say "natural" can be a misleading name. This is because human choices can make things worse. For example, how we use land can change risks. Climate change also affects how often weather hazards happen.
