These locations hold pieces of our history. They might show us old wars or how people lived. They can be buildings, landscapes, or even large structures. Most sites are at least 50 years old. They can be important to a local town or the whole world. These sites help us access our shared culture.

Laws help keep these important places safe.

Different groups manage these rules. Some use a national authority to watch over sites. Other places use regional groups for management. Sometimes, a site is still used by owners today. They might run a hotel or a museum there. However, they must follow strict rules to keep the property. They might even have periodic visits from experts to check on the site.

Many sites are house museums for famous people.

These people might be artists, soldiers, or politicians. Museums keep the house in its original state. They save the old furniture and tools used by the person. For example, the Salvador Dalí House Museum is in Spain. You can also find Freud museum houses in many European cities. The Ben-Yehuda House is located in Jerusalem, Israel. These places help people learn through cultural tourism.

Some sites have very special international protection.

UNESCO is a group from the United Nations. They manage World Heritage Sites across the globe. As of June 2023, there were 1,157 of these sites. They exist in 167 different countries. Many of these sites attract huge crowds of visitors. The Forbidden City in China gets 14 million visitors every year. Gulangyu in China gets 12.4 million visitors. The Great Smoky Mountains in the U.S. gets 11 million.

In the United States, there are many ways to track history. The National Register of Historic Places lists over 90,000 sites. About 2,600 of these are National Historic Landmarks. New York, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania have the most landmarks. The National Park Service helps save these places. They use the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Each state also has an office to help look after them. This work helps keep our history alive for everyone.
