A geoglyph is a very large design made on the ground.

People create these shapes using things found in nature. They might use stones, gravel, or even just earth. There are two main ways to make them. A positive geoglyph uses materials laid out in a pattern. This is like arranging stones on the floor. A negative geoglyph is made by removing part of the ground. This shows different colors or textures in the soil.

Some of these are called hill figures. These are made on a slope so they look clear from a distance.

Making these designs requires a lot of work and planning. Some people make them to be seen from high above. In the south of England, people cut shapes into chalk hillsides. You can find the Uffington White Horse there. Other examples include the Cerne Abbas Giant and the Long Man of Wilmington. Some of these figures are very ancient. Others were made only a few hundred years ago.

There are also newer figures like the Litlington White Horse. These keep a long tradition of hillside art alive.

Many famous geoglyphs come from long ago. The Nazca Lines in Peru are perhaps the most famous. They show shapes like a hummingbird.

We do not know exactly why the creators made them. In Brazil, many geoglyphs were found in the Amazon rainforest. These were discovered starting in 1977 by Ondemar Dias. Later, Alceu Ranzi found more by flying over Acre. These finds tell us about civilizations that lived there long ago. Some people think other ancient sites in Arabia are even older.

Geoglyphs can be found in many different places.

You can see them in the Ural Mountains and South Australia. The Marree Man is a large work in Australia. It is a modern work of art rather than an ancient one. In the United States, some towns use letters on hills. These are often called mountain monograms. In Australia, the artist Andrew Rogers made a huge geoglyph. It is called Bunjil and shows a mythical creature. It used 1,500 tonnes of rock to build.

Today, people still find new ways to make geoglyphs. Some use the Land Art movement to create them. A famous example is called Spiral Jetty by Robert Smithson. Others use technology to make virtual geoglyphs. People use GPS systems or mobile apps to draw shapes. In 2008, Alfie Dennen made a project called Britglyph. People across the United Kingdom left rocks in specific spots. When viewed on a website, they formed an image of a watch. This shows how art can connect people even through screens.
