A petroglyph is a special kind of rock art.

People create these images by changing the surface of a stone. They might use tools to carve, pick, or scrape the rock. They can also use a way called abrading to wear the surface down. The word comes from Greek words meaning "stone" and "carve."

While some people use the word for rock paintings, those are actually called petrographs. Both types are part of the bigger world of rock art. This art is very important to many different cultures around the world.

An artist removes part of the rock surface to make a shape. This could be a simple line or a complex scene. Some carvings show animals, like a caravan of bighorn sheep. Others show people or geometric patterns. These patterns can sometimes be very specific. Some even look like "form constants," which are shapes linked to how the human brain works. The way a person carves can even show a local "dialect" or style.

These carvings have a very long history.

You can find petroglyphs in almost every part of the globe. The only place without them is Antarctica. Many were made about 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. However, the oldest ones are much older than that. They are found at Murujuga in Western Australia. These are estimated to be 40,000 to 50,000 years old. In July 2025, the Murujuga site became a World Heritage Site.

There are many theories about why people made this art.

Some might have been used for religious or spiritual reasons. Some people think shamans carved them during special rituals. Other carvings might have worked as maps. These maps could show trails or the distance traveled. Some even act as markers for the stars in the sky. In India, some carvings might have been used as musical instruments called "rock gongs."

Petroglyphs help us connect to the past in many ways.

In Scandinavia, carvings from the Bronze Age might show boundaries between tribes. Some Siberian carvings even look like early writing called runes. Even though people lived far apart, some styles look similar across continents. This might mean people moved long distances a long time ago. We are still learning about these ancient messages today. They show us how humans have always wanted to share their stories.
