People make them by carving into stone. They might pick, scrape, or cut the surface. The word comes from Greek words for "stone" and "carve."

These carvings are found all over the world. They are in almost every land except Antarctica. The oldest ones are in Murujuga, Western Australia. These are 40,000 to 50,000 years old. In 2025, this site became a World Heritage Site.

We do not always know why people made them. Some might be part of religious acts. Others might act as maps. Some show trails or stars in the sky. Some carvings might even show land shapes like rivers. In India, some rocks may have been musical instruments. They are like rock gongs. In Scandinavia, carvings might show borders between groups. Different areas even have their own styles. These styles are like local dialects. People have cherished these rocks for a very long time.
