arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Body painting is a special kind of art. Artists paint designs directly onto human skin. Unlike tattoos, this art is temporary. Most designs last for just a few hours. Some types can stay on for weeks. For example, Mehndi uses henna leaves to create designs. This is very popular for brides in India.

There are many ways to make these designs. Many cultures use natural things from the earth. Some people use clay, chalk, or ash. Others use cattle dung or charcoal. In South America, people use juice from the Genipa americana plant. This is called jagua. Some dyes, like huito, can stay on the skin for weeks.

People have used body art for a very long time. Face painting goes back to the Paleolithic times. Many groups use it for special ceremonies or rituals. Indigenous Australians and people in Africa still use traditional styles. In the Pacific Northwest, tribes used it for hunting and ceremonies. In Madagascar, women use a wood paste called masonjoany. They paint stars and flowers on their faces.
