This can include many different things. Some people use tattoos or body piercings. Others use body painting or scarification. Some artists even use technology to change their bodies. They might use virtual avatars or implants. This art helps people think about what it means to be human. It can also explore how we feel inside. Artists often look at things like gender and personal identity. They want to see how the body and the mind work together.

There are many ways to perform body art. Some artists use their bodies to tell a story. Others use the body to test physical limits. For example, Marina Abramović once danced until she was exhausted. In another piece, she let people use 72 different tools on her. These tools included feathers and even knives. Some artists use things like broken glass or guns to show intense feelings.

Other artists focus on the absence of the body. They might use shadows or silhouettes instead of the physical form. This helps people focus on the shape of a person. It makes the viewer think about the body in a new way.

Body art has a very long history. It grew out of a style called Conceptual Art in the 1970s. But even earlier, artists were experimenting with it. In 1913, a group called the Russian Futurists performed in Moscow. Artists like Natalia Goncharova and Milkhail Larionov painted their faces. They even wrote a paper called "Why do we paint ourselves?" In 1965, the Vienna Action Group was formed. Members like Hermann Nitsch and Otto Mühl performed many body art actions. In the United States, artists like Chris Burden were also very active. They used their bodies to create art that people would never forget.

Many famous artists have made their mark with body art. Vito Acconci once filmed himself stepping on a chair for months. This was to show his daily exercise routine. Photographer Spencer Tunick is known for large photo shoots. He gathers many naked people in public places around the world. In France, artists like Orlan used plastic surgery for their work. In Italy, Ketty La Rocca was a famous artist in the 1980s. Even the Body Worlds exhibition uses preserved bodies for art. This shows how the human form can be arranged in artistic ways. These artists use different names and tools to share their visions.

Today, you can see body art in many places. It is part of popular culture through tattoos and piercings. People also use it for big events and celebrations. The World Naked Bike Ride happens twice a year. In Portland, Oregon, about 10,000 people join the ride. They paint their bodies with art and messages. There is also the Burning Man festival in Nevada. In Sydney, the Body Art Ride creates a living rainbow. People paint themselves and ride to the ocean. Even medical students use body paint to learn. They paint on volunteers to see where muscles and lungs are. This helps them learn anatomy in a kind and positive way.
