Nudity is the state of being without clothing. For most of human history, being naked was the normal way to live.

Early humans lost their thick body hair a long time ago. This change helped them stay cool in warm, open lands. Being able to release body heat helped the human brain grow. As people became more modern, they began to decorate their bodies. They used jewelry, tattoos, and body paint to share information.

These decorations helped people show who they were to others.

Clothing began to change how people lived in groups. Scientists think humans started wearing clothes habitually between 170,000 and 83,000 years ago. We know this from studying the history of clothing lice.

In many old societies, clothes showed a person's rank. People with high status wore more clothing to show their power. Those at the bottom of society might have very little. In ancient Egypt, many people only wore a cloth around their waist.

This helped them work in the heat while staying covered.

History shows that different cultures saw the body in different ways. In ancient Greece, people celebrated the naked body. Athletes often competed without clothes to show strength and beauty.

They believed the naked body looked like the powerful gods. In the Roman Empire, people enjoyed bathing together in large public baths.

These baths were social places for many people. However, views changed as certain religious beliefs spread through Europe. These beliefs began to link nudity to ideas of shame.

When explorers met people in places like Africa and the Americas, they noticed big differences. Many Indigenous groups in warm climates lived without much clothing.

For these people, being naked was often natural and not shameful. They might use clothing for ceremonies or to stay warm. Some groups used body decorations instead of clothes to communicate.

As Western ideas spread through colonialism, clothing became more common. This changed how many different cultures dressed in their daily lives.

Today, rules about nudity are different in every country. Most modern societies have laws about what is okay to wear in public.

Some people enjoy social nudity at special resorts or beaches. In Finland and Japan, people use saunas and baths to be together.

In some parts of Africa, children play naked and it is seen as normal. People also use nudity in art to show beauty. Sometimes, people even use nudity as a way to protest or speak out.
