Modesty is a way of dressing or acting. It aims to avoid encouraging sexual attraction in others. The word comes from the Latin word "modestus." This means "keeping within measure."

People use modesty to show respect or follow rules. Standards for modesty change based on many different things. They change depending on your culture or your generation. They also change based on the specific place you are in.

How people practice modesty can look very different. In some Middle Eastern societies, women might cover their bodies with a niqab. They might also choose not to talk to men who are not family. In some Christian groups, like the Anabaptists, women might wear long skirts. They may also wear blouses that go up to the collar. They often wear a small head covering or a shawl.

Some societies think a one-piece swimsuit is modest. However, they might think a bikini is not. These rules help people follow the customs of their community.

History shows that modesty rules are always changing. In much of the world, rules have relaxed since the 1800s. Clothing has become shorter and more form-fitting over time.

In the West, many women now wear clothes that show their midriff. In the United States, breastfeeding in public has become more common too. Even laws have changed to help mothers. A 2010 health care bill helped provide private spaces for nursing. These changes show how ideas about the body evolve.

Modesty is also a very big business today. In 2023, people spent $254 billion on modest fashion. Experts think this will grow to $473 billion by 2025.

Many religions also have their own special codes. In Buddhism, modesty can mean being humble about your skills. It means being unpretentious about your achievements. Buddhist monks even have specific rules called the Sekhiya. These rules give guidelines on how to dress properly.

It also links to how we act in private versus public. For example, nudity might be okay in a single-sex changing room. But it would not be okay in a school. Modesty is about knowing the right way to act in each situation. It is a way to show dignity and respect for oneself and others.
