A swimsuit is clothing made for water activities. People wear them to swim, dive, or surf. You might also wear one to sunbathe on the beach.

There are many different names for this clothing. Some people call them bathing suits or swimming costumes. Others use words like swimming togs, bathers, or cossies. Men might wear swimming trunks, while women might wear a swimming suit. These clothes help people move easily in the water. They also allow people to enjoy the sun safely.

How a swimsuit works often depends on the material. Before the 1930s, most suits were made of wool. However, wool becomes very heavy when it gets wet. In the 1920s, people began using rayon to make tight-fitting suits. This material was not always very strong when wet. Later, the 1930s brought new materials like latex and nylon. Nylon is helpful because it dries much faster than organic fibers.

In the 1960s, makers added spandex to help suits fit snugly. Today, many suits use polyester because it is durable and lightweight.

History shows how styles have changed over many years. In the 1930s, swimsuits began to hug the body more closely. A famous designer named Rudi Gernreich created the monokini in 1964. This was a very new and controversial topless swimsuit for women. For men, nylon swim briefs were launched at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.

Anne Cole invented the tankini in 1998. This style covers the stomach like a tank top. These changes show how fashion and technology grow together over time.

There are many special types of suits for different needs. A wetsuit is made of neoprene to keep you warm. It traps a thin layer of water against your skin.

Some people wear a burkini to follow rules for modest dress. A burkini covers the whole body and the head. This design was created in Australia by Aheda Zanetti. For athletes, racing suits use special fabric to reduce drag.

These suits help swimmers move faster through the water.

Safety and choice are also very important parts of swimwear. The color of your suit can help a lifeguard see you. Blue or gray suits might be hard to see underwater.

Bright neon colors like pink or orange are much safer. They are easier for rescuers to spot in the waves. People also choose styles based on what they want to show. Some wear suits for beauty pageants or sports competitions. Others choose simple shirts to protect their skin from the sun.
