They are often called racing briefs or competition briefs. These suits have a triangular front and a solid back. They fit very close to the body. People also call them bathers, togs, or even budgie smugglers in Australia.

Many athletes love them because they make moving in water easier. They are very popular in many different water sports around the world.

How these suits work is quite interesting. They are made to reduce drag. Drag is the pull of the water that tries to slow a swimmer down.

To stop drag, the fabric must hug the body tightly. This helps the water flow smoothly over the swimmer. Some suits use nylon and spandex, which is a stretchy material called Lycra. Nylon is very strong for long practice sessions. Lycra is great for fast races because it is very slippery.

The history of these briefs began in 1956. A company called Speedo introduced them that year. A famous swimmer named Murray Rose wore them at the Summer Olympics in Melbourne. He won three gold medals while wearing them!

Because of his success, the name Speedo became a common way to describe any racing brief. This is called a generic trademark. Today, many different brands like Adidas and Nike make similar styles.

Different sports use different kinds of briefs. In water polo, players wear suits with side panels larger than 3 inches. This helps stop other players from grabbing the fabric during a game.

Some high-level players even wear two suits at once to stay safe. Divers also use these briefs as a standard for their sport. For triathlons, swimmers use special briefs with light padding. This padding helps them feel comfortable when they ride a bike after the swim.

People wear swim briefs for many different reasons. In places like Europe and South America, they are common for casual beach trips. In the United States, people often choose roomier board shorts instead. Some men wear briefs under their shorts to stay modest. They are also good for getting a lot of sunshine. They dry very quickly once you get out of the water. You can find them in many colors and patterns to match your style.
