Two teams compete against each other to score goals. Each team has seven players in the water at once. Six of these are field players who play both offense and defense. The seventh player is the goalkeeper who protects the goal. The team with the most goals at the end wins. This sport is known for being very demanding and difficult. It requires great strength and teamwork to succeed.

To move through the water, players use a special movement called the eggbeater kick.

They must swim to get around the pool and pass the ball. Players can move the ball by throwing it or by dribbling it in front of them. The ball is made of air-tight nylon and it floats on the water. Players wear caps that have numbers and colors on them. This helps everyone see who is on which team. The game is divided into four quarters of play. It is a very active way to use swimming skills.

This sport has a long and interesting history. It began in Scotland and England during the mid-19th century.

A man named William Wilson helped create the first rules. He was a pioneer from Glasgow. Some people used to call the game "water rugby." In the late 1800s, the game was even called "aquatic football." One early match in 1876 lasted only 15 minutes because the ball burst. Today, the game is much more advanced and organized.

Water polo is now a global sport with many fans. It is very popular in many parts of Europe. You can find many players in Spain, Italy, Hungary, and Greece. It is also played in the United States, Canada, Australia, and China.

Some players are called utility players because they can do many jobs. The center forward is a key player who stays near the goal. The goalkeeper has special rules that others do not have. For example, a goalie can use two hands to touch the ball. They can also punch the ball with a clenched fist. These skills help them stop the other team from scoring.
