Tug of war is a sport built on strength and teamwork.

Two teams compete by pulling on opposite ends of a rope. The goal is to pull the other team a certain distance. The rope has a center line and two markers near the middle. A team wins by pulling a marker across that center line. This activity requires many people to work together as one.

It is a way to show how much power a group can make.

Playing the game follows specific rules to keep it fair. Teams usually have eight or more members pulling at once. Some rules say you cannot touch the ground for a long time. You also cannot lower your elbow below your knee while you pull. Using the right tools is very important for safety. Sometimes ropes can break if there is a sudden release of energy. Because of this, people use special ropes made to withstand huge force.

This sport has a very long and interesting history. People practiced it in ancient Egypt, Greece, and China. In ancient Greece, it was a way to build strength for battle. In China, Emperor Xuanzong once held massive games. He used ropes that were 120 meters long. Each side had more than 500 people pulling the rope. They even had teams of drummers to encourage the participants.

Many different countries have their own special ways to play. In Japan, it is a ritual to pray for a good harvest. In Myanmar, it can be a custom to ask for rain. The Naha tug of war in the Ryukyu Islands uses a giant rope. That rope is over 200 meters long and weighs 40 metric tons.

The sport was even in the Summer Olympics from 1900 to 1920. Today, the Tug of War International Federation organizes World Championships every two years.

Even though it is an old game, it stays popular today. You can see it at school festivals or community events. In the United States, some towns compete across a river. In New Zealand, some people play a version while lying down. It is a way for people to connect through a shared challenge. Whether it is a small club or a huge festival, people love the excitement.
