Spandex

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Spandex is a very special type of synthetic fiber. It is known for being exceptionally elastic, which means it can stretch very far. You can stretch these fibers up to five times their original length. Even after a big stretch, the material returns to its original shape. This makes clothes feel very comfortable on the human body. This comfort happens because of pressure receptors in our skin.

These receptors sense how tight or soft a fabric feels. Spandex helps clothes move easily with your body.

Making spandex is a unique way to work with materials. Unlike many other fibers, you cannot melt spandex to shape it. If you try to melt it, the polymer will break down. Instead, makers use a special spinning method. They start with a concentrated liquid solution of the polymer. This liquid is drawn through tiny holes called spinnerets. As the liquid comes out, the solvent evaporates to form the fiber.

Scientists have studied these types of materials for a long time. The idea of combining certain chemicals was recognized by Otto Bayer in the 1930s. Later, a chemist named Joseph Shivers invented spandex in 1958. He worked for a company called DuPont. He modified a material called Dacron polyester to make it elastic. He also made sure the new fiber could handle high temperatures. DuPont originally called the brand Lycra to make it stand out.

Spandex has a very busy history in the world of fashion. In the 1950s, it was used to make better girdles for women. By the 1968 Winter Olympic Games, the French ski team wore it. This helped link the fiber to fitness and sports. In the 1980s, wearing spandex shorts became a huge fashion trend. By 1987, DuPont could not keep up with all the demand. In 2010, about 80% of clothes sold in the United States had spandex in them.

You probably wear spandex every single day without even knowing it. It is usually mixed with other fibers like cotton or polyester. It only makes up a small part of the final fabric. This allows the clothes to keep the soft feel of the other materials. You can find it in many things like shirts, pants, and even shoes. It is also very popular in cycling gear like jerseys and gloves.

It also helps many types of clothing dry much faster.
