Women and girls often wear them in the sea or a pool. People also wear them to play water polo. They are great for any activity in the sun, like sun bathing. Most modern suits are skin-tight. They cover the torso of the person wearing them. Some designs might show the back or the upper chest.

These suits remain popular on beaches today.

There are many different ways to make a one-piece suit. One common type is the tank suit. It looks very much like a sleeveless bodysuit. You might see halterneck styles with straps around the neck. There are also plunge front and wrap-round styles. Some suits are called pretzel suits. For athletes, there are special shoulder strap styles. These include the racerback, fastback, and flyback styles. A newer invention is called the bodyskin. This covers the torso, arms, and legs. It uses textured fabric to help swimmers move like fish or sharks.

The history of these suits is very interesting. An Australian swimmer named Annette Kellerman helped make them famous. In 1907, she was arrested on a Boston beach. People thought her suit showed too much skin. Her suit showed her arms, legs, and neck. This caused a large public outcry. Because of this, people began to talk about her style more. She even marketed her own bathing suits. These were known as "the Annette Kellerman."

Many important things happened as these suits became common. By 1910, women in parts of Europe wore them. In 1912, they were the official clothes for women at the Summer Olympics. This was the first time women competed in those games. In the 1920s, magazines like Harper's Bazaar praised the beautiful fit of the suits. In the 1930s, people began to use new materials. They used latex and nylon to make suits hug the body. These new fabrics helped people enjoy the sun more.

Swimsuit styles have changed as people's habits changed too. In the 1920s and 1930s, people moved from just swimming to sun bathing. Because of this, suits became more decorative. Makers used fabrics like rayon, silk, and jersey. Even though the bikini became very popular after the 1960s, the one-piece is still here. It has stayed a steady part of life at the beach. It connects our modern swimming gear to a long history of fashion.
