Women and girls wear them in pools or the sea. People also wear them to sit in the sun. Most suits fit tight to the body. They cover the torso. Some designs show the back or the chest.

One common type is the tank suit. It looks like a sleeveless bodysuit. There are many other styles too. Some have straps that tie behind the neck. These are called halterneck styles. Some suits cover the arms and legs. These are called bodyskins. They help pro swimmers move fast. The fabric helps them cut through water like a fish.

These suits have a long history. A swimmer named Annette Kellerman made them famous. In 1907, she was once arrested for her suit. People thought her suit showed too much skin. It showed her arms, legs, and neck. This caused a big outcry. Later, women wore these suits in the 1912 Olympics. In the 1930s, new fabrics like nylon were used. These helped suits hug the body. Even with the bikini, one-piece suits are still popular today.
