A jumpsuit is a single piece of clothing.

It covers the arms and the legs at once. Most jumpsuits do not cover the head or the hands. Many people like them because they are very simple. They are light and easy to move in. You can just put them on and go. However, using them can be a bit tricky. Unless they have a special opening in the back, you must take the whole suit off to use the bathroom.

How a jumpsuit works depends on its job.

For some, it is a tool for safety. Pilots and astronauts wear special flight suits. These suits help keep clothes from floating in zero gravity. They also stay close to the body during hard moves. Race car drivers wear a fire suit for protection. Motorcycle racers wear leather suits to stop scrapes.

In jails, jumpsuits help identify inmates quickly. Some use bright orange colors. Other places use different colors to show safety levels or history.

The history of the jumpsuit began in 1919.

It was first made for people jumping from planes. These skydivers needed warmth in the cold, high air. They also needed to keep their handles and grips clear. Other clothes like boiler suits and dungarees were used too. But the jumpsuit became a fashion item first. This happened because it had a slimmer cut than the others.

Fashion designers helped the jumpsuit grow over many years. In the 1930s, Elsa Schiaparelli made them for women. Vera Maxwell made sporty styles in the mid-1940s. During the Second World War, women wore them because they were useful. In 1964, the jumpsuit appeared in Vogue magazine. It became a big trend very quickly after that. By 1965, Vogue even showed patterns for white jersey jumpsuits.

Jumpsuits have been part of many different worlds. In the 1970s, they were a unisex style for everyone. Famous stars like Elvis Presley and Cher wore them on stage. Designer Geoffrey Beene even called them the ballgowns of the next century. The style went away for a while after that. Then, in 2002, Nicolas Ghesquière helped bring them back. He used many different patterns and fabrics to make them popular again.
