A hijab is a head covering used by many Muslim women.

It is usually a scarf wrapped around the head. This covering hides the hair, neck, and ears. However, it leaves the face visible to others. Some women choose to wear a niqab instead. A niqab is a veil that covers more of the body.

For many, the hijab is a symbol of faith and modesty. Others wear it as a way to show personal style or adornment.

There are different ways to wear these garments. The Qur'an uses terms like jilbab and khimar for clothing. A jilbab is a long and loose-fitting outer garment. A khimar is a type of headscarf. Scholars look at these texts to understand how to dress. Some believe the hijab should cover everything but the face and hands. Others say it should cover the whole body, including the face. These different views are found in religious texts called hadith and fiqh.

The word hijab has a long history. In Arabic, it means a curtain or a cloth barrier. It comes from a root word that means to hide or block. In early times, it described a partition used to separate spaces. The Qur'an mentions a hijab as a curtain for the wives of Muhammad. This helped provide privacy for them. Before Islam, veiling was already practiced in places like Arabia. It was often used to show high social status, much like in ancient Greece or Assyria.

Rules for wearing the hijab change depending on where you live. In some countries, laws require women to wear it. In other places, like France, there are restrictions or bans on the scarf.

This can create very difficult situations for women. In some regions, women face trouble for wearing the hijab. In other places, they face trouble for not wearing it. These laws are often part of local customs. Even in places like Germany, wearing a headscarf can lead to legal debates in court.

Clothing often connects to how people see themselves in the world. The hijab can be a way to express religious identity. It can also be used as a way to protest. In 2014, a woman used her headscarf to make a statement in Iraq.

This shows that clothing is more than just fabric. It carries deep meaning for many cultures. Just like other traditions, it is a part of how people live their lives and share their beliefs.
