A kerchief is a small piece of cloth. It is often shaped like a square or a triangle. People tie these cloths around their heads, necks, or faces. They use them to look nice or for protection.

Some people use them as a type of hat. For others, a kerchief is a way to show their beliefs. Many religious groups wear them. For example, some Anabaptists and Eastern Orthodox Christians wear headcoverings. Some Muslim and Jewish people also use them. These cloths can be both useful and beautiful.

One popular type is called a bandana. The name comes from Hindi words meaning "to tie" or "tie-dyeing."

Bandanas are often very colorful. They frequently have a paisley pattern on them. People wear them to hold their hair back in place. You can also tie one around your neck to stop sunburn. If there is a lot of dust, a person can wear it over their nose. This helps them breathe more easily in dusty places.

Bandanas started a long time ago in India. They began as bright silk or cotton cloths. These cloths often had white spots on red or blue backgrounds. This style is called Bandhani. The silk versions used the very best yarns. Later, people in Glasgow began making bandana prints using cotton. In the late 1700s, bandanas became popular in the United States. People who used snuff liked colored silk. These cloths hid tobacco stains better than plain white ones.

Throughout history, bandanas have done many different jobs. In the 1800s, they had political ads printed on them. During World War I and World War II, they had military ads. Cowboys often wore them around their necks as gear. Famous singers like Willie Nelson and Roy Rogers also wore them.

In the 1970s, they became popular with bikers. Even different groups in California used specific colors. The Bloods wore red, while the Crips wore blue. Green bandanas are now a symbol for the abortion-rights movement.

Many cultures have their own special cloths. In Central Asia, people use a kerchief called an Oramal.

In Kyrgyzstan, a white Oramal shows a woman is married. Men in those areas also used them for riding horses. In Southeast Asia, Malay men wear a headscarf called a tengkolok. They wear this during special times like weddings. These different traditions show how one simple cloth can mean many things.
