Nudity is the state of being without clothing. It is a condition that has shaped human history, biology, and social structures for hundreds of thousands of years. While modern laws often regulate how much skin a person can show in public, nudity has served many different roles throughout time. It has been a natural state of being, a way to show social status, a ritual costume, and a tool for communication.

The biological origins of nudity are linked to human evolution. Early hominids underwent a significant change as they lost their thick body hair. Scientists believe this happened to help humans dissipate body heat more effectively. This was especially important as early humans moved from shaded forests to the open savanna. The ability to cool the body through eccrine sweating helped protect the brain, which is a very temperature-sensitive organ. This biological shift allowed humans to remain active in various climates without overheating.

As humans became behaviorally modern, they began to use body adornment to communicate. Between 40,000 and 60,000 years ago, humans used jewelry, tattoos, body paint, and scarification. These practices allowed individuals to share social and individual characteristics without speaking. Some researchers suggest these decorations were a way to "dress" the body without concealing it. Recent studies place the use of such adornment as far back as 77,000 years ago in South Africa.

The history of habitual clothing use marks the transition from the Neolithic period to the beginning of civilization. This shift occurred between 7,000 and 9,000 years ago. Genetic analysis provides a unique way to track this change. A 2010 study on the divergence of clothing lice from head lice suggests humans began wearing clothes habitually between 170,000 and 83,000 years ago. In many early civilizations, clothing became a symbol of rank and authority. In Mesopotamia and Egypt, the amount of cloth worn often indicated a person's economic class or social standing.

Different ancient cultures held very different views regarding the unclothed body. In ancient Greece, male nudity was celebrated in athletics to assert physical virtue and privilege. The naked body was seen as a ritual costume that reflected the beauty and power of the gods. However, these traditions were not always shared. In the Roman Empire, Etruscan, and early Roman athletics, public nudity became associated with different social meanings. In the Roman Empire, nudity was often a matter of social status, and mixed-sex bathing was common in public baths until the fourth century CE.

The spread of Western concepts of modesty significantly impacted global cultures through colonialism. When European explorers encountered Indigenous peoples in Africa, the Americas, and Oceania, they noticed a lack of Western-style clothing. For many Indigenous groups in tropical climates, nudity was not associated with shame. They used clothing for decoration, ceremony, or protection from the cold, but were often nude in daily life. The imposition of Western dress codes changed many of these traditional ways of life.

Contemporary social norms regarding nudity are complex and vary by culture and geography. Many modern societies have laws defining indecent exposure to regulate public appearance. However, some cultures maintain traditions of communal nudity, such as the use of saunas in Finland or baths in Japan. In some sub-Saharan African cultures, partial or complete nudity is viewed as natural, and women may bare their breasts for nursing without it being seen as sexual.

Nudity also carries significant political and artistic weight today. It can be used as a form of protest by those without power, or imposed as a punishment by those in power. In the fine arts, the term "nude" often carries positive associations with the beauty of the human form. Some groups continue to advocate for the benefits of social nudity, while others oppose it based on religious beliefs. These differing views reflect ongoing debates about the boundaries between public and private spaces.
