language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

People can choose to remove the hair on their bodies or heads. This is often called hair removal, but you might also hear the words epilation or depilation. Most humans have hair on their heads, eyebrows, and limbs. Hair grows in different amounts and thicknesses for different people. Some people have very little hair, while others have much more. People remove hair for many reasons, such as for religion, health, or to follow a fashion.

There are many ways that hair is removed. In the past, people used simple tools like seashells or flint. Some used beeswax or special pastes to help the hair come off. In ancient Greece and Rome, people used substances called psilothrum or dropax. In some parts of India and Iran, a mixture called vajibt is still used. This mixture uses slaked lime and wood-ash. Other cultures used oil from unripe olives to remove hair.

Humans have been practicing hair removal since the Neolithic era. In ancient Egypt, people removed hair to stay clean from lice. They often wore Nubian wigs instead of head hair. Egyptian priests also shaved to stay pure for their gods. In ancient Rome, smooth skin showed that a person had high status. There were even people called alipilus who were slaves trained to remove hair for others.

History shows how ideas about hair change over time. In the 14th century, some ladies picked hair from their foreheads to change their face shape. Queen Elizabeth I made removing eyebrows fashionable in the 1500s. In 1760, the first safety straight razor was made in Paris for men. Later, in 1915, a magazine called Harper's Bazaar said underarm hair removal was a necessity. Shortly after, Gillette made the Milady Décolleté Gillette razor just for women.
