Artists use the body as their main tool. They may use paint on the skin. Some people use tattoos or piercings. Others use scarification, which is making marks on the skin.

Many artists use their bodies to perform. This is called performance art. Some artists act in ways that test their limits. For example, Marina Abramović once danced until she fell down. She also did a piece where she let people use many tools on her. Other artists have used things like broken glass or even guns. These works can be very intense.

Body art can also show how people feel. It can be about a person's identity. For example, Ana Mendieta used art to talk about her race and gender. She also made art using her silhouette, which is the dark shape of a body.

Natalia Goncharova was an early artist who painted her face for a show.

Today, people use body art in fun ways too. In the World Naked Bike Ride, people paint their bodies with art. They ride bikes to share a message. Even doctors use body paint. They paint on skin to learn how muscles and lungs work. This helps them learn in a kind way.
