Pedology

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Pedology is a special branch of science. It is the study of how soil forms and changes. The word comes from Greek words for soil and study. Scientists who do this work are called pedologists. They want to understand the history of the land. They look at how soil grows and moves through time. This helps us understand the natural world around us.

Soil is a very busy place. It is called the pedosphere. This is where many things meet and interact. Air, water, and temperature all play a part. Living things like plants and tiny microbes live there too. Soil also holds bits of rock and old remains of life. As soil forms, it creates deep layers called horizons. These layers grow slowly as the soil reaches a steady state.

Five main factors drive the way soil is made. These are climate, living things, and the shape of the land. The starting material is the parent rock. The last factor is time. These things work together to create different soil patterns. Some scientists study how soil helps plants grow. This branch is called edaphology. Today, these two groups of scientists work together. They use their knowledge to protect the land.

Many people have helped us learn about soil. Famous pedologists include Vasily Dokuchaev and Hilgard. Other names include Hans Jenny and Curtis F. Marbut. Scientists also look at very old soils called paleosols. These are soils that have turned into rock. They are found in many land environments. These old soils tell us about how the climate changed long ago. They help us see what happened in the deep past.

Understanding soil is like reading a history book. The soil carries marks from things that happened long ago. We can see how the land used to look. This is helpful for predicting future changes. It also helps us use the land in a smart way. Soil is also a natural factory for clay. Some rocks called shales actually started as soil clay. This clay washed into the ocean and became rock later.
