Soil morphology is a special branch of soil science.

It focuses on the technical description of soil. Scientists look at physical properties like color, texture, and structure. They also study how soil stays together, which is called consistence. These studies help us understand how soil forms and how to use it. Most of this work happens outside in a field. Scientists look at a soil profile to see different layers.

These layers are called horizons, and they sit parallel to the ground.

To study soil, scientists must first see it clearly. They often dig a pit or use a tool called an auger.

They look at a pedon, which is a small unit of soil. A pedon is an imaginary three-dimensional block of soil. It usually covers between 1 and 10 square meters of land. Inside the pedon, scientists identify the different horizons. They use capital letters like O, A, or B to name them. They even use numbers or lowercase letters to add more detail. This helps them describe exactly where one layer ends and another begins.

People have known about soil for a long time. Farmers have always known that different soils grow crops differently. However, soil science only became its own subject in the 19th century. Early experts were often called agro-chemists or agro-geologists. A famous team led by V.V. Dokuchaev changed how we see soil. They noticed that soils in different places looked similar if the climate was the same. Later, scientists like K.D. Glinka and Hans Jenny helped more. They proved that soil is a natural body made by climate, living things, and time.

Color is one of the most important things to record.

Scientists use the Munsell color system to be very exact. This system was made by a painter named Albert Munsell. It uses three parts: hue, value, and chroma. Hue is the main color, like red or yellow. Value tells us if the color is light or dark. Chroma tells us how bright or dull the color is. Soil can be black from organic matter or red from iron. If soil stays too wet, it might look gray or blue.

Texture is another way to describe what soil is made of.

It depends on the size of the bits in the soil. These bits are called sand, silt, and clay. Scientists can feel the texture by wetting a handful of soil. They roll it into a ball and squeeze it. If they can make a long ribbon, the soil has more clay.

For a perfect measurement, they take soil to a lab. They use a tool called a soil texture triangle to see the exact mix.
