These organizations use buildings or rooms to display their own collections. People often call them art galleries too. While they mostly show visual art, they do much more. They can host music concerts, poetry readings, or even lectures. Some museums also have temporary exhibitions. These special shows often include items borrowed from other collections.

Museums work in many different ways. Some are owned by the public, while others are private. Some are open to everyone, but others have certain rules. Inside, you might find rooms called galleries. These rooms often focus on one specific theme. For example, an Egyptian Gallery might show art from ancient Egypt.

Museums often own more art than they can show at once. They keep the extra pieces in reserve collections. Some art, like drawings or photographs, is kept in special print rooms to stay safe.

Long ago, art was not easy for everyone to see. Most large works were made for religious groups or powerful leaders. These items were kept in temples, churches, or grand palaces. In the past, people at the Palace of Versailles had to wear special clothes to visit.

Some wealthy collectors, like Julius Caesar, even gave their treasures to temples. Over time, more people began to share their collections. The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford opened in 1683 to show items given to the university.

Many famous museums became public over the centuries. The Kunstmuseum Basel is considered the first public art museum in the world. Its history goes back to a collection bought by the city of Basel in 1661. In 1793, the Musée du Louvre opened to the public in France.

In the United States, the Corcoran Gallery of Art was likely the first museum. It was originally kept in the Renwick Gallery, which was finished in 1874. That building was even called "the American Louvre."

Art museums are part of our daily lives in many ways. Many schools and colleges have their own art museums. In the US, there are over 700 university art museums. These help students and the community learn about art. You can also find art in outdoor sculpture gardens.

Even the buildings themselves are a type of art. Some museums use old styles, while others use very modern designs. These buildings help us connect with the beautiful things people create.
