An artist is a person who makes art or practices the arts.

Most people use this word to talk about visual artists like painters. However, the entertainment business also uses it for actors, musicians, and dancers. You might even hear people call writers artists, though "author" is more common. There is no single definition of what art is. Because of this, artists and philosophers still debate what counts as art. This makes the very idea of an artist a bit mysterious.

Making art can happen in many different ways. Some people use digital tools to create net art or video art. Others use their hands to make sculptures or paintings. In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics divides artists into two groups. Craft artists make handmade things that people use, like pottery or clothing. Fine artists make things mainly for their beauty, such as illustrations or sculptures. Both types of artists must use long-term practice and repetition to build their skills.

The history of the artist is very long and changes often. In ancient Greece, nine Muses watched over different areas of creation. For example, Calliope oversaw epic poetry, while Urania watched over astronomy. Interestingly, no Muse was assigned to painting or sculpture. In those times, painters were often seen as manual laborers. During the Middle Ages, the word artist meant someone with great skill. It described a person who could do work better than anyone else.

Many famous groups and leaders have shaped how art is made. In 1556, a 12-year-old leader named Akbar took control of Delhi in India. He formed a royal manuscript atelier, which is a group of artists working together. This team included 30 painters and 70 assistants from Persia, India, and Central Asia. In 1909, an Italian poet named Filippo Tommaso Marinetti wrote the Manifesto of Futurism. He believed the speed of cars and planes created a new kind of beauty. This movement showed how art can change with new technology.

Today, being an artist is a real job with many paths. In the United States, about half of all artists are self-employed. Some artists work in big industries, like book publishers hiring illustrators. Others might work part-time and hold a second job. The median income for craft and fine artists in the US is about $56,260 per year. This is close to the $61,000 median for all art-related fields. Whether through a computer or a paintbrush, artists continue to explore the world.
