People use this word in many ways. It often means someone who paints or draws. But it also describes singers, dancers, and actors. Some people call writers artists, too. Even though we use the word a lot, people still debate what art really is.

In ancient Greece, nine Muses watched over different arts. For example, Terpsichore was the Muse of dance. Euterpe was the Muse of music. In those days, painters and sculptors were seen as workers. Their work was often seen as manual labor. Later, in the Middle Ages, the word meant a person with great skill. An artist was someone who did work better than others.

Today, artists use many tools. Some use computers to make digital art. Others use clay to make pottery. In the United States, some people are called craft artists. They make useful things like clothes. Fine artists make things like paintings or sculptures. Both kinds of artists must practice for a long time to get good.

Many artists work for themselves. Some also have other jobs to help them.
