arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

An obelisk is a tall and slender monument. It has four sides that taper toward the top. The very top is a small pyramid called a pyramidion.

Ancient Egyptian people first built these tall pillars. They called them tekhenu. Most ancient obelisks were monolithic. This means they were carved from one single piece of stone.

They were very important to Egyptian religion. Egyptians often placed them in pairs at temple entrances. These monuments symbolized the sun god, Ra. Some believed they looked like frozen rays of sunlight.

Making and moving these stones was a massive task. Many ancient obelisks were made of hard red granite. In the past, people had to carve them out of stone quarries. One famous example is the unfinished obelisk at Aswan. Moving them to new places required amazing skill.

Moving the Vatican obelisk in 1586 was a huge feat of engineering. It took nearly 1,000 men to do the work. They also used 140 carthorses and 47 large cranes. This job helped the man in charge, Domenico Fontana, become very famous.

History shows how these stones traveled the world. Around 30 BCE, Rome took control of Egypt. Romans moved many obelisks from Egyptian temples to Rome.

Because of this, more obelisks are in Rome than in Egypt today. The Lateran Obelisk in Rome is the tallest standing ancient monolithic obelisk. It stands 32 meters tall. Another famous one is the Vatican obelisk at Saint Peter's Square. Emperor Caligula brought that one to Rome in 37 CE.

Other cultures also made their own versions. Assyrian kings built obelisks to celebrate their many achievements.

These monuments often had carvings called reliefs on them. These carvings showed kings hunting or winning battles. The British Museum holds several of these, like the Black Obelisk. It was built by King Shalmaneser III. It shows scenes of rulers paying tribute to him. These stones tell us stories about how those kings lived.

Today, you can find obelisks in many famous cities. They are not just in Egypt or Rome anymore.

You can see a pair called Cleopatra's Needles in London and New York. There is also the Luxor Obelisk in Paris. These stones connect us to the very distant past. They show us how people long ago honored their gods and leaders. Even in busy modern cities, these quiet stone giants still stand tall.
