Pyramid

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A pyramid is a very special kind of structure. Its visible sides are shaped like large triangles. These sides all meet at a single point at the top. The base can be many different shapes, like a square or a triangle. Most of the weight of a pyramid stays near the ground. This happens because the structure gets thinner as it goes up. This smart design helped ancient people build huge monuments that lasted a long time.

Many different groups of people built pyramids in different ways. In Mesopotamia, people built structures called ziggurats. These were made from sun-dried mud bricks. They often had many levels, ranging from two to seven tiers. Ziggurats were part of large temple complexes. Some were even brightly painted in gold or bronze. People might have used ramps to reach shrines at the top.

Egypt is home to some of the most famous pyramids. Ancient Egyptians built these from 2700 BC until about 1700 BC. They used stones like limestone, granite, or basalt. The first one was a step pyramid built for Pharaoh Djoser. Later, kings built the Great Pyramid of Giza. It was the tallest structure in the world for a very long time. It remained the tallest until a cathedral was finished in 1311 AD.

Pyramids can be found all over the world. In Sudan, there are 220 pyramids left to see. These Nubian pyramids have steeper sides than the Egyptian ones. In Mexico, the Great Pyramid of Cholula is the largest by volume. Mesoamerican pyramids were often stepped and had temples on top. In Nigeria, the Igbo people built clay pyramids for a god named Ala. Even in Spain, people built structures shaped like pyramids using lava.

Today, we still see the influence of these shapes. Some people use the pyramid shape for modern buildings. You might see a pyramid in a museum or a city. In the past, these shapes were linked to the sun or to gods. For example, Egyptian pyramids were often placed west of the Nile. This was so the pharaoh's soul could join the sun. Even today, these ancient shapes still make us wonder.
