First, architects chose a flat area of bedrock for a strong base. They did not build on sand. Workers used copper tools to cut limestone and granite. For the harder granite, they used sand and powders to wear the rock down.

To move the huge stones, they likely used wooden sledges. They would wet the ground to make the sledges slide more easily. This helped them move the heavy materials to the right spot.

These monuments were built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom.

These pyramids served as tombs for the kings. The Egyptians believed the pyramids helped the kings reach the sun god, Ra. The slanted sides were meant to look like rays of sun. This helped the king's spirit travel to the next world.

The Great Pyramid is truly enormous in size.

Historian Herodotus once said 100,000 workers built it in 20 years. Modern historians think it took between 20 and 27 years. They believe about 20,000 to 30,000 workers stayed there all year. The Great Pyramid is also the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It is the only one that is still standing today.

The pyramids are famous all over the world.

Many people see them as symbols of Ancient Egypt. Some people in the Middle Ages even called them the "Granaries of Joseph."

The site also shows how much the ancients knew about the stars. Some believe the pyramids line up with the stars in Orion's belt. Others think they align with the sun during the equinox. These connections show how the pyramids link the earth to the sky.
