Giza has seen many different groups of people pass through its lands. These included the Persians, Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines. Later, the land was conquered by Muslims in the 7th century. The city of Giza itself was founded in 642 AD.

Cairo University moved to the city in 1924. Because of this, the city is a major center for education in the Mediterranean Region. There are many other schools and colleges for students to attend. The climate in Giza is hot and dry, just like a desert. In the spring, windstorms can bring dust from the Sahara into the city. Even though it is a desert area, rain is very rare. Snow is also extremely rare in this part of the world.
