The Giza pyramid complex is a massive collection of ancient monuments located in Egypt.

It sits at the edge of the Western Desert, west of the Nile River. Today, the site is located near the city of Giza and southwest of Cairo. This area is part of the Pyramid Fields of the Memphis and its Necropolis UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a necropolis, which is a large area used for burying the dead. The complex includes the three major pyramids, several temples, cemeteries, and a workers' village.

It is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world.

Construction of these massive structures required incredible planning and engineering.

Architects first selected a flat area of bedrock to serve as a stable foundation. They avoided building on sand to ensure the heavy structures would not shift. Workers used copper tools to cut and chisel softer limestone blocks. For harder granite, they used rough powders and sands to wear the rock down.

To move the stones, they likely placed large slabs on wooden sledges. They may have wetted the ground to make the sledges slide more easily. This process allowed them to transport massive amounts of material to the construction site.

The complex is defined by three primary pyramids built during the Fourth Dynasty.

The Great Pyramid, also called the Pyramid of Khufu, is the largest and oldest. A few hundred meters southwest lies the Pyramid of Khafre, which appears larger because of its elevated location. Further southwest is the Pyramid of Menkaure, which is the smallest of the three.

Each king's pyramid was part of a larger complex. These included valley temples, causeways, and mortuary temples. The Great Sphinx, which likely has the head of Khafre, sits on the east side of the complex.

The history of the site begins even before the pyramids were built.

Evidence of the Maadi culture was found at the foot of the Great Pyramid. Radiocarbon dating suggests these early settlements existed around 4000 BCE. The major pyramid construction occurred during the Old Kingdom. The Great Pyramid was the tallest architectural structure in the world at the time.

In the 15th century, the traveler Pedro Tafur called them the "Granaries of Joseph." Later, the Great Pyramid was named one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It remains the only one of those ancient wonders still in existence.

The scale of the Great Pyramid is truly immense.

It was built using 5.5 million tonnes of limestone and 8,000 tonnes of granite. Much of this stone came from the local Mokattam Formation. Some fine white limestone was quarried in Tura and brought by barge across the Nile.

While the Greek historian Herodotus claimed 100,000 workers built it, modern historians have different estimates. They believe the project took between 20 and 27 years. They also estimate that between 20,000 and 30,000 workers were employed year-round. This workforce included skilled laborers and people like bakers and carpenters.

The pyramids served a deep religious and spiritual purpose for the Pharaohs.

They were built as tombs to protect the king's body and his "ka," or spirit. The Egyptians believed death was a journey to a new world. The pyramid shape may have symbolized the rays of the sun. This design provided a symbolic stairway for the king to ascend to the sun god, Ra.

The structures also acted as storage for items the king would need in the afterlife. This connection between the physical and the spiritual is central to the site.

There is also a strong connection between the complex and astronomy.

The pyramids are oriented toward the cardinal points with great precision. Some theories, like the Orion Correlation Theory, suggest they align with the stars in Orion's belt. Other ideas suggest they align with the sun during the fall equinox. To track the sun, the Egyptians may have used a gnomon, which is a vertical rod. These alignments show how the people of Giza connected their monuments to the movement of the heavens.
