It sits near the city of Luxor. The site is filled with temples, chapels, and large gates called pylons. Long ago, people called it Ipet-isut. This name means "The Most Select of Places."

Today, most people call it Karnak. This name comes from a nearby village called el-Karnak. The village name means "fortified village." It is a very famous place for travelers to visit. In 1979, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The site is made of several different parts. The largest part is the Precinct of Amun-Re. Most visitors go here to see the amazing buildings.

There are also the Precinct of Mut and the Precinct of Montu. The Precinct of Mut is very old. It was built for a goddess of creation. Some parts of the site are closed to the public. Other small temples connect these main areas to the Luxor Temple. This makes the whole area a massive, open site.

Building Karnak took a very long time. It started during the Middle Kingdom. Construction continued all the way into the Ptolemaic Kingdom.

About thirty different pharaohs helped build the complex. This is why the site is so large and diverse. Many different gods were honored here over many centuries. Some gods were worshipped very early in Egyptian history. Others were worshipped much later. This long history makes Karnak a unique place in the world.

One of the most famous parts is the Great Hypostyle Hall.

This hall has 134 massive columns. They are set in 16 rows. Some columns are very tall. The stone pieces on top are called architraves. These stones might weigh 70 tons each!

Workers may have used large ramps made of sand or mud to move them. They might have used wooden tracks to pull the heavy stones up. This was a very hard job that required great balance.

Many famous leaders left their mark on Karnak. Pharaoh Hatshepsut built monuments and restored old temples there. She even put up two huge stone pillars called obelisks.

One of her obelisks still stands today. It is the second-tallest ancient obelisk left on Earth. Later, the site changed as new religions arrived. Some people even built Coptic churches among the old ruins. Now, Karnak is the second-most visited site in Egypt. Only the Giza pyramids get more visitors.
