Barents Sea

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Barents Sea is a large part of the Arctic Ocean. It sits off the northern coasts of Norway and Russia. This sea is divided between the waters of these two countries. Many islands are found nearby, such as Svalbard and Novaya Zemlya. The Kola Peninsula lies to its south. The sea is quite shallow, with an average depth of only 230 meters.

Life in the sea is very active and busy. Tiny living things called phytoplankton grow in huge amounts. These plants create a milky-blue bloom in the water.

Small creatures like krill and zooplankton eat these plants. Then, larger animals like capelin and polar cod eat the tiny creatures. This food chain supports big animals like whales and harp seals. The sea also holds the world's largest cod population.

History shows how much people have explored this area. Long ago, Russians called it the Northern Sea or the Murman Sea. The sea is named after a Dutch navigator named Willem Barentsz. He led expeditions to the far north in the late 1500s.

Sailors sometimes called it "The Devil's Dance Floor." This was because the weather and waves are so hard to predict. Some rowers even call it the "Devil's Jaw."

There are three main types of water in the Barents Sea. One type is warm and salty Atlantic water. This comes from the North Atlantic drift. This warm water keeps some southern ports ice-free all year.

Another type is cold Arctic water from the north. The third type is warm coastal water. Where the Atlantic and Arctic waters meet, they form a line called the Polar Front. This sea is also important for finding oil and gas.

Today, the Barents Sea is changing due to global warming. This is often called "Atlantification." As the water warms, the sea ice begins to melt and shrink. This change can affect weather in places like Europe. For example, more evaporation might lead to more winter snow.

People also work hard to protect the sea from pollution. There is much concern about garbage and oil spills. Keeping the water clean is a big job for the people who live nearby.
