It sits on the banks of Kola Bay, which is a small fjord. This bay is part of the Barents Sea. Murmansk is very special because it is the largest city in the world north of the Arctic Circle.

Even though it is so far north, the water does not freeze in the winter. A warm current from the North Atlantic keeps the port open for ships. This helps the city stay connected to the rest of Europe by rail and road.

The climate in Murmansk is subarctic. This means the winters are long and very cold. The temperature usually stays below freezing from October all the way to May. The summers are short and cool. In July, the weather is mild with average highs above 10 degrees Celsius.

One amazing thing to see is the midnight sun. For 63 days in the summer, the sun never sets. In the winter, the city faces the polar night. For 40 days, it stays dark from December to January.

The city has a long and busy history. It began as a railway station in 1915 during World War I. The railroad was built to reach an ice-free spot on the coast. In 1916, the settlement was officially named Romanov-on-Murman.

A year later, the name was changed to Murmansk. The name comes from "Murman," an old Russian word for Norwegians. The city grew much larger during the twentieth century.

Murmansk faced very hard times during World War II. It was a vital link for supplies coming from the Western world. Because it was so important, the city was bombed 792 times.

The city suffered huge destruction from the fighting. For its bravery, Murmansk was later named a Hero City in 1985.

During the Cold War, the city became a major center for icebreakers and submarines.

Today, Murmansk is the center of the Murmansk Oblast region. The city is divided into three main districts: Leninsky, Oktyabrsky, and Pervomaysky.

Most of the people living there are ethnic Russians. There are also smaller groups of Ukrainians and Belarusians. The population has been getting smaller since the end of the Cold War. In 2021, about 270,384 people lived in the city.

Visitors can explore the city through its many museums.
