Murmansk is a major port city in Russia. It serves as the administrative center of the Murmansk Oblast.

It is located in the far northwest part of the country. This city is the largest in the world north of the Arctic Circle. It sits on the slopes and banks of Kola Bay. This bay is a modest fjord. It is an estuarine inlet of the Barents Sea. Murmansk is a vital port for the Arctic Ocean. It is located a long distance from Moscow and the borders of Norway and Finland.

The city remains ice-free even in the Arctic. This happens because of the warm North Atlantic Current. This current keeps the waters around the port from freezing. Because of this, Murmansk resembles large cities in western Russia. It has highway and railway access to Europe. It even has the northernmost trolleybus system on Earth. This connectivity is very different from other Arctic ports. For example, Dikson in Siberia and Iqaluit in Canada are much more isolated.

The climate in Murmansk is classified as subarctic. This means the city has long, cold winters. Temperatures usually stay below 0 degrees Celsius from October to May. The summers are short and cool. In July, average highs can exceed 15 degrees Celsius. The city sees very little precipitation, with an annual average of just under 500 mm. The sun also follows a unique pattern here. The "midnight sun" stays above the horizon for 63 days from May to July. Conversely, the polar night lasts for 40 days from December to January.

Murmansk has a unique history tied to the Russian Empire. It was the last city founded in that empire. In 1915, World War I led to the construction of the Kirov Railway. This railroad connected Petrozavodsk to the ice-free Murman Coast. The terminus became known as the Murman station. It quickly developed a port and a naval base. In 1916, the settlement was named Romanov-on-Murman.

Following the February Revolution in 1917, the town was renamed Murmansk. The name likely comes from "Murman," an old Russian term for Norwegians.

The city played a critical role during World War II. It was a vital link for the Soviet Union to the Western world. Through the Lend-Lease policy, the United States supplied food and oil. Arctic convoys brought military equipment and raw materials to the port.

Because of this, German and Finnish forces launched an offensive against it. The Luftwaffe bombed Murmansk 792 times during the war. The city suffered massive destruction. Its damage was rivaled only by Leningrad and Stalingrad. In 1985, the city was officially named a Hero City to honor its resistance.

During the Cold War, Murmansk became a center for naval activity. It was a hub for Soviet submarines and icebreakers. The city grew significantly during the twentieth century. However, the population has declined since the Cold War ended. In 1989, the population was 468,039 people. By the 2021 Census, it had fallen to 270,384. This decline is linked to the reduction of nearby military facilities.

Most residents are ethnic Russians. There are also Ukrainian and Belarusian minorities. In 2010, 89.6% of the population was Russian.

Today, Murmansk is divided into three administrative okrugs. These are Leninsky, Oktyabrsky, and Pervymaysky.

The city also has several museums, such as the Murmansk Oblast Museum. Visitors can see the Alyosha statue, which depicts a Soviet soldier. The Hotel Arctic is also a notable landmark. It opened in 1984 and is the tallest building above the Arctic Circle. The city continues to be an important part of the Russian Arctic system.
