It is a very special place for science and nature.

The land on Spitsbergen looks very wild. You can see many high mountains and deep fjords.

There are also many large glaciers made of ice. In 1999, ice covered about 58.5% of the island. The weather is an Arctic climate. It is very cold, but it stays warmer than other places at the same latitude. During the summer, the sun stays up all night. This is called the midnight sun.

Reindeer also live here. There are many seabirds that use the island as a breeding ground. Marine mammals live in the cold waters nearby. To keep the land safe, there are six national parks. These parks help protect the fragile environment from being hurt.

People have used Spitsbergen for a long time. A Dutch explorer named Willem Barentsz found it in 1596. He named it Spitsbergen because it means "pointed mountains."

Later, people started mining coal at the end of the 19th century. In 1920, a treaty made Svalbard part of Norway. Now, Norway is the official owner of the islands.

Life on the island is very different from most places. There are no roads that connect the different towns.
